Thymolphthalein is an acid–base (pH) indicator. Its transition range is around pH 9.3–10.5. Below this pH, it is colorless; above, it is blue. Thymolphthalein is used as a visual indicator for the pH of swimming pools, changing the water blue when the pH increases, it can be used to detect the presence of urine being introduced into the normally neutral pH of the water. The molar extinction coefficient for the blue thymolphthalein dianion is 38,000M−1cm−1 at 595nm.

生产方法
1.将麝香草酚、邻苯二甲酸酐和无水氯化锌混合,加热。加入乙醚及苯。在水浴上加热回流,倾出上层溶剂,向固体物中加入甲醇,加热。用甲醇抽提剩余的固体物,滴加水出现沉淀、冷却,便得纯品麝香草酚酞。 1.用作pH值指示剂,变色范围为pH值9.4-10.6,由无色变蓝色。酸碱指示剂,用于血液检验。
