Sorbitan monostearate is an ester of sorbitan (a sorbitol derivative) and stearic acid and is sometimes referred to as a synthetic wax. It is primarily used as an emulsifier to keep water and oils mixed. Sorbitan monostearate is used in the manufacture of food and healthcare products and is a non-ionic surfactant with emulsifying, dispersing, and wetting properties. It is also employed to create synthetic fibers, metal machining fluid, and brighteners in the leather industry, and as an emulsifier in coatings, pesticides, and various applications in the plastics, food and cosmetics industries. Sorbitans are also known as \"Spans\".

生产方法
1. 一步法 将等摩尔的脂肪酸、山梨糖醇及适量的催化剂氢氧化钠加入反应釜,在氮气流的保护下,加热至190℃便开始脱水、酯化反应;继续加热至230~250℃时,一边酯化,一边分子内脱水成酐,反应时间约5～7h;反应结束后冷却至85~95℃,加适量的过氧化氢脱色30min即得产品。 广泛用于食品、医药、农药等工业中作乳化剂，油漆及颜料中作分散剂。
